A Day in History (Cross post!)

A Day in History

On June 7th & 8th, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the Society for Creative Anachronism, the Genesee Valley Atlatl Association and the Genesee Valley Flintknappers will be holding its 9th annual Living History Weekend at the Maple Lane RV Park and Campground in Cuba, N.Y. This is in conjunction with the Cuba Dairy Days Festival, and is free to the public.

If you always wished to spend your day saving damsels in distress or fighting off an angry foe, there will be a medieval festival with several period demonstrations including:
The cheese making process from the goat to the tasting,
Medieval combat demonstrations (you can even try it your self if you dare)
Thrown weapons contests with knives and axes
Period food sampling
Ladies in garb will be happy to teach you about medieval scribal arts
Even try your hand at a medieval dance or two
Every thing we do is hands on

Or, the public is invited to try its hand at using a primitive throwing stick known as the Atlatl to spear a Pre-Historic Mastodon that will be set up on the grounds. The Genesee Valley Atlatl Association will be holding several atlatl competitions during the weekend including the WAA International Standard Accuracy Competitions, Team Atlatl Competitions, Animal Hunters Rounds and Individual Competitions. The past Men's, Women's and Youth World Champions will be present competing with many other contestants from around the country on the tour for World Champion of 2008. There will be a range set up and people to guide anyone who would like to try throwing, but children must be accompanied by an adult as these are weapons.

The Genesee Valley Flintknappers Association will be holding a two-day knap-in. This is using the techniques of percussion and flaking to hammer different types of stone into beautiful points and useful tools. Several experts will be on hand to guide new comers or you can just stand and watch amazing works being created.

On Saturday at 1:00 there will be an auction of works made and donated by the artisans present, including stone from around the world, points, atlatls and darts, hand-made knives and many other pieces.

Vendors will also be on the grounds with creative works of art to view and buy.

The shire of Blackwater is helping do a demo with an assortment of other historical groups.

If you are available we would love to have you come.
And if you are of a mind to camp out there is a 10 dollar fee per tent.

Camping available Friday and sat night.

What we need is food i.e. period cookies / cakes, pies, etc. things not needing refrigeration but are single servings that people can take with them.

Fighters both heavy and fencing. If we can get a fencing martial?

Artisans to show your wears and show how you make your stuff .

We have done this demo for many years and have always had a blast!

Someone is building a giant huge humongous gargantuan gas station on Route 422, between 79 and Curry Road. So, it seems like you'll be able to get gas right there around the corner from Coopers, coming or going.

Also being added are traffic lights when you exit 79 ramps onto 422 and also where the gas station will be. Don't know when station is opening, but it is going up fast.

Armor Grade Leather

I'm a leather worker from Morgantown (Mostly hobby leatherworking) and I was wondering how to get my stuff qualified as SCA Heavy Arms certified armor? I know they require 10oz thickness if it's unconditioned, but I make Cuirboli (Water hardened) leather that is pretty solid. I've tested some of my pieces with a hatchet (Not while wearing them of course) and it really just made a nasty dent in the armored scale. Anyway, could someone give me some more info? I'd like to broaden my market from just costume / accessory pieces to actual functional items.

For those of you with medieval interest and SCA

For those of you with medieval interest and SCA
Ok folks, here it goes...

The Northern Panhandle of West Virginia has not had an official SCA group for over 7 years now. My lord and I are out to change this. We have scheduled a meeting at our residence for next Sunday (Feb 24) at 2 o'clock. This not an official SCA meeting yet, but it is to determine if there is an interest in pursuiting it any farther. Starting a local group requires some comittment, but in the long run it's lots of fun.

So if you have ANY kind of interest at all in anything medieval, or close to medieval, I ask you to come to my home this Sunday. If you don't know where i live, message me.

Hope to see you there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Harvest Raid -(Cross-posted)

Harvest
Raid XIV
Sept.28 - 30, 2007
Shire of Heronter
Bemus Point, NY

The good folk of Heronter invite everyone to join them September 28 - 29, 2007 for their 14th annual Harvest Raid! We are honored to be hosting four Royal Championships! -- Fighting, Fencing, Archery, & Thrown Weapons. Merchants, a Bardic Circle and Swap, an A&S competition, and a fabulous feast are all planned. As is tradition, we are privileged to have access to the Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Camp on Route 430 (no street address) in Bemus Point, New York on beautiful Chautauqua Lake.

The site will open at 5pm Friday afternoon and close at noon on Sunday. The site is very discretely damp and open flames are permitted during feast. Cabins (with electricity) are available, but there is also plenty of space for tents for those who prefer their privacy. The site is not fully handicap accessible, but is fairly flat. Please call the event steward with specific concerns. No pets are allowed; service animals must be leashed.

NEW! As we seem to have a fair number of newcomers, both to AEthelmearc and Heronter, we will be having a "Popcorn Social" (It's like an Ice Cream Social, but less fattening :D ) at the fireplace at 6PM on Friday. Garb encouraged, but optional. Herons will be on hand to explain what the SCA is, and how to get in touch with various special interest groups with AEthelmearc. All are welcome to sit and chat and share experiences.

The event steward is: Lord Antonio de Luna (Brian Newman, 9 Shaw Avenue, Jamestown, NY 14701 716-664-6474 before 10:00 p.m. or seneschal@heronter.org). The reservations clerk is Mistress Dorinda Courtenay. All reservations should be sent to Her Grace, (Dorinda Courtine-White 47 Chestnut St., Jamestown, NY 14701, phone 716-664-5487 before 10:00 p.m. or fencing@heronter.org).

Please note that all reservations for cabin space or feast must be accompanied by the appropriate site fee as well as the cabin or feast fee. Please include the modern names of everyone for whom you are sending a reservation. Please note if your child/babe in arms will require their own seat at feast or their own bed in a cabin. If you require confirmation of your reservation please include an email address or a self-addressed envelope. All checks should be made payable to SCA Inc. Shire of Heronter. As always, the only good reservation is a paid reservation, and the reservation deadline is September 22th 2007.

As always, we will try our best to accommodate all cabin requests, however we cannot make any guarantees.

The head cook for Harvest Raid is Lady Brigette von Eisenburg. Any dietary accommodations can be communicated to her at headcook@heronter.org. Please note that any special dietary accommodations should be arranged with her no later than September 15, 2007.

Merchants are always welcome, but renovations to the hall will require all merchants to be outside, so please be prepared with your own shade and furniture. There is no fee, but merchants are encouraged to provide an item for our silent auction. Please contact the Merchant Liaison Lady Muirenn ingen Tipraite Meic Cormaic (at merchants@heronter.org ) with any questions.

Fees are as follows:
Site Fee: $8.00 Adults
Feast Fee: $7.00 Adults
Cabin Fee (Cabins): $6.00 Adults (Weekend)
Camping Fee (Tents): $1.00 Adults (Weekend)

Thus, an adult wishing to eat the feast and stay in a cabin would pay $21.00 for the weekend. Children (5-12) are half price, those under 5 are free (but please list them in your reservation should they require a bed or a seat at feast so we may reserve one for them). Students, age 13-17, will be discounted to half price for the day fee, but knowing how many of them eat, we must ask the full adult feast price for those who wish to stay for dinner.

The site fee includes a sideboard lunch and the camping/cabin fees include a light breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.

A family cap will be set at $60.00 (2 adults and their minor children).

Please note that, as per Society policy, a $3 non-member surcharge will be charged on top of all other fees for those gentles age 18 and over who are not members of the SCA. This may be sent with your reservation or paid at the door. Directions:

From the West, South and East: Take your best route to I-86 (former Route 17). Take Exit 10 (Westfield/Mayville) to get to Route 430 West. (From the West it is marked only as Route 430 West. Do not take exit 9 to Bemus Point). Follow the signs for Route 430 West towards Westfield and Mayville. From the exit, it will be several miles to the site (3 or 4 miles depending on where you start counting). You will pass Long Point Park and Midway Park before seeing the Lutheran Camp on your left. The camp is at the top of a long hill next to a huge tree. The sign is difficult to spot, so we will try to mark the spot well. The camp is across the road from a restaurant now called Kadan's Place".

From the North: Take your best Route to I-90. Exit at the Westfield exit (#60) and take Route 394 to Mayville. Pick up Route 430 East and follow to the site. The site will be on your right and will be marked as above.

From Anywhere Else: Click on "Directions" at the top of the page and Mapquest will help you with directions.

Searching for Pennsic University chancellor?

I've got an idea in the back of my head that is forcing it's way out and I need to get in touch with the person that is in charge of the A&S tents. I went to the Pennsic webiste and sent off an email to the address listed but have gotten no repsonse. That was the only contact listed and it was a generic University at Pennsic address?

Can anyone here help me with contact info other than this?

Many thanks!

Well Ive decided after several years of not playing with sticks, to jump back in the fray. The problem is I stopped fighting when i was in Vatavia. Now i'm here in AEthelmearc and i don't know any of the households out here. Any help for a Stick Jock that wants to get back in the game, would be appreciated.

Come Hither all ye Fencers to the Shire of Blackwater to help with the largest Private Resort this side of the Pacific Ocean. They have asked for a Demo of 15th - 16th centry Fighting and Fencing to take place on the 10 of March at Holimont Ski Resort in Ellicottville, NY.
Set up is anytime prior to 10am with the Demo to run from 11 to 2. There will be a 40 foot long "Pirate Ship" that rises to 20 ft. made out
of - Now wait for it- SNOW! Is that cool or what?(Pun intended) Fencing may be outdoors if weather permits (supposed to be clear and in the 40's) otherwise we will have an indoor area. (Imagine Marque of Barroom rules) We may (Marshal permitting ) be allowed to fight onboard (if you dare). The theme is something like the Pirates of the Carribean Mardi Gras party.

There is a Mardie Gras parade (thanks Nugg) at 7pm downtown Ellicottville which we can partake in.

Directions:
Take your best route to Rte 219 in Ellicottville. At the stop light
in Town take Rte 242 West towards Little Valley. About 1 mile on the
left is the big green sign for Holimont. Turn left and bear left as
you go up hill. Go around the Main Chalet to the Main parking lot in
back. We will be all the way across the lot toward the Racing Center.
(ask the attendant- let him know that you are SCA for the Demo at
the Ship.) Arrr

YIS
Raadjgier

Forwarded for your info! Last year we all got sunburned playing in the snow! This year should be the same or better! We had heavy fighting last year, as well as juggling, Hearldry, and displays of A&S static and ongoing with Lady Brigitte doing finger loop weaving. Hopefully this year will be jsut as fun or better!

Pennsic Date Change discussions

With all the recent discussion threads in other tribes, as well as the details on pennsicwar.org, I thought I'd get some input and ask some questions and give some opinions here as well.

first, let me say that while the changes do not directly effect me, as I do not bring my children and I do not work full time outside my house, that I feel for those who it does effect.
second, I also understand the need to adjust for other things in real life such as 'schools'.

with that said.. I wonder about all those people who were just foresaken due to this change. Those who are working full time and can't take vacations in July due to Colleges, black out dates in the companies, and those of us who have other things going on. I also wonder about all the other events that are planned. For instance what about those of us who do the Jamestown Scandinavian festival? this year it's the weekend before war, which already makes some of us hesitant to do... but make it the middle week and well darn... I can't say how the local event that isn't sponsored by the SCA will do? That's of course just one example because that's all I can speak of first hand.

I realize that the SCA is family oriented. I don't think (opinion) that adjusting this event for schools start times, is the best way to handle this particular event. I think most of us would say that Pennsic isn't necessarily "the" family event. I think many people want it to be, but in reality, you can't force it. I've heard speak of if Pennsic should become a forced family event only, then they would migrate to Gulf Wars which I hear is quite an event. I myself am kid friendly (I have 5 of them middle school or below) So I can relate - before anyone says "you don't know, cuz you don't have to deal with it".. I do have to. trust me.

Perhaps this event will allow for more kids, adults with children, if you will. But what happens to those others? Will the wholeness of Pennsic's spirit and life change if some of those things are altered? Will it still be Pennsic, or will it be Pennsic-like? I don't mean that in a bad sense, I honestly think that it will change into some event that is subtly different. Not because of 'kids' or what not.. just that the changes will effect more than just what day that it falls on.

I'm curious about how this whole thought process went. How first was it brought up that it "needed" to be changed? Was a census of the attendees or potential attendees taken to see if this would increase or decrease attendance? What items were taken into consideration when it was discussed? How long had this been discussed prior to a vote taken? What potential benefits were assumed by changing the dates? What were the foreseen possible down sides? How does the benefits measure up to the cons? Roughly what are the percentages of attendance by each kingdom? Would you say Midrealm is 1/4 or 1/3 or some other percentage of total Pennsic Attendees? What about the other kingdoms? What about the misplacement of others unrelated to SCA Pennsic event? (example, cooper's has a huge RV camper event the week before they shut down for us. what about that? will they have to alter their vacations as well? Did anyone talk to them about changing their event? and a million other questions)

Am I going to fast? LOL I really am just curious about it. I as I stated, am not directly effected by the change. But... my camp might be, and many of my current friends might also. I wonder if someone within 'the loop' so to speak might speak on these detailed questions? Many of us can 'guess' what was going on, or hypothisize.

So, I end this with so many more questions in my head. I thank you for taking this in the light it is meant to be, which isn't accusing, just inquisitive. I recognize everyone's voice in response.
Sincerely

Harvest Raid XIII Sept 29- Oct 1

Harvest
Raid XIII
Sept.29 - Oct.1 2006
Shire of Heronter
Bemus Point, NY

The good folk of Heronter invite everyone to join them September 29 - October 1, 2006 for their 13th annual Harvest Raid! Fighting, Fencing, Archery, Bardic Arts, Thrown Weapons, Merchants, an A&S competition, and a fabulous feast are all planned. As is tradition, we are privileged to have access to the Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Camp on Route 430 (no street address) in Bemus Point, New York on beautiful Chautauqua Lake.

The site will open at 5pm Friday afternoon and close at noon on Sunday. The Schedule The site is very discretely damp and open flames are permitted during feast. Cabins (with electricity) are available, but there is also plenty of space for tents for those who prefer their privacy. The site is not fully handicap accessible, but is fairly flat. Please call the event steward with specific concerns. No pets are allowed; service animals must be leashed.

The event stewards are Lady Muirenn ingen Tipraite meic Cormaic (Michelle Jackson, 25 Dunham Street, Sheffield, PA 16347, 814-730-6459 before 10:00 p.m. or medievalchic@peoplepc.com) and Lady Sabina de Lyons (Denice Tollison, 5417 West Lake Road, Fredonia, NY 14063, (716) 679-7452 before 10:00 p.m. or Denice.Tollison@fredonia.edu). The reservations clerk is Mistress Dorinda Courtenay. All reservations should be sent to Her Grace, (Dorinda Courtine-White 47 Chestnut St., Jamestown, NY 14701, phone 716-664-5487 before 10:00 p.m. or dorinda.e.courtine-white@cummins.com).

As always, the only good reservation is a paid reservation, and the reservation deadline is September 25th 2006.

As always, we will try our best to accommodate all cabin requests, however we cannot make any guarantees.

The head cook for Harvest Raid is THL Olwen ferch Rhys (Carole Butcher). Any dietary accommodations can be communicated to her at ferchrhys@hotmail.com. Please note that any special dietary accommodations should be arranged with her no later than September 15, 2006.

Merchants are always welcome, but renovations to the hall will require all merchants to be outside, so please be prepared with your own shade and furniture. There is no fee, but merchants are encouraged to provide an item for our silent auction. Please contact the Merchant Liaison Dagonell Collingwood (David Salley at dagonell@heronter.org ) with any questions.

Fees are as follows:
Site fee: $7.00 Adults
Feast Fee: $7.00 Adults
Cabin Fee (Cabins): $6.00 Adults (Weekend)
Camping Fee (Tents): $1.00 Adults (Weekend)

Thus, an adult wishing to eat the feast and stay in a cabin would pay $20.00 for the weekend. Children (5-12) are half price, those under 5 are free (but please list them in your reservation should they require a bed or a seat at feast so we may reserve one for them). Students, age 12-17, will be discounted to half price for the day fee, but knowing how many of them eat, we must ask the full adult feast price for those who wish to stay for dinner.

Thanks for reading and the use of the tribe for this purpose.

I have a 75 ft (yellow maple???) in my yard that needs to come
down. It'd make nice firewood, but I don't have the cash to pay the
Tree Guy to take it down. I'd be glad to give 1/2 (or more)the wood to whoever
helped with this project. It'd be even better if it was to a SCAdian who could
use the wood, so I thought I'd post here and cross post a few others
before I ask around for suggestions in town.

Situation:
Tree at the base of an inclined ledge where two garages sit about 10 feet away.
Tree is surrounded on two other sides with wires about 10 feet on either side.
Only one side is open and even that.. it is not pretty picture. It would need
to be topped, and dropped branch by branch. The other thing is we don't plan
on taking it ALL the way to the base. We want to leave it about 12 feet up and make
a Tree house on the tree itself after it's down. (reuse the stump as support)

Viking Village Demo V

Shire of Heronter (Jamestown, NY) July 28-30, 2006

Calling all Vikings (and neighbors of Vikings)! It’s time once again to set up our Viking Village at the Annual Jamestown Scandinavian Folk Festival. We would love to have as many people as possible join us in this celebration of all things Viking.

This year the festival director has expressed the desire for a larger SCA presence at the festival. Currently we will have thrown weapons, Kube, and Hnefatafl in addition to Viking age displays. We would like to have heavy weapons and archery provided we have marshals and participants.

The area our village is set up is situated near the Leif Ericson Viking Ship and the Norwegian horse (real horse/s). We have plenty of room for...

Archery; Armor; Beads; Camping; Drop spindles; Felting; Fingerloop Braiding; Heavy Fighting; Hnefatafl; Kube; Mead; Naalbinding; Spang; Thrown Weapons; Viking Accessories; Viking Age Personal Display; Viking Clothing; Viking Culture; Viking Food; Viking Jewelry; Viking Languages; Viking Shoes; Viking Skalds; Viking Textiles; Wood Chip Carving

http://www.scandinavianjamestown.org/3scand.htm

Cost: Free to people in garb!

Site information: Jamestown Community College Campus (525 Falconer St., Jamestown, NY 14701). The hours for the festival are Friday 3:00 PM – 10:00 PM, Saturday 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM, and Sunday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The site is discreetly damp, above ground fires are permitted. Sorry, no pets.

Defenders of Sherwood VI

The Shire of Misty Highlands once again challenges all to join us for battle and competition in the forests of Sherwood. This year Robin and his band have boldly moved their encampment to a more scenic area of the forest, where the Sheriff's forces will attempt to best them in contests of archery, novelty shoots, and full armored engagements on the field with combat archery. Of course the merry men will also offer fencing, thrown weapons, scouting activities, A&S classes, a Southern Scribal Symposium, a Gage Tourney, plus an evening feast created by Lady Ailionora. We are also happy to host the Queen's Combat Archery Championship again this year. The evenings will also see bardic activities, mid-eastern drumming and dancing, and of course our traditional coffee bar, "Holy Grounds" will be open, with games to challenge the intellect. Visit http://www.vikingr.net/sherwood6 for schedules and up to date information.

This year our new site will be Camp Mahonegon (6C71 Box 93 Ellamore, WV), 3 miles off Rt. 33 (yes, that's a four lane highway), near Buckhannon, WV. The site opens at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 2th, and closes at Noon on Sunday, June 4th. The site is dry and no pets are allowed. Service animals must be leashed. Please note that this is a rustic scout camp, and unfortunately is not fully handicap accessible.

Accommodations: Separate female/ male dormitory-style bunks are available, and land will be available for tent camping. The cabins have standard metal-frame bunk beds with mattresses; attendees should bring their own bedding. There are also several open-air Adirondack cabins, and of course plenty of land for tent camping. For those seeking more luxurious or private sleeping arrangements, there are several hotels less than 25 minutes from the site, check the website for details.

The site fee is $7.00 for the weekend, which includes brunch on Saturday. A cabin bunk is $2.00; tent camping is free. On-board for the feast will be an additional $7.00. Children under 12 are ½ price; 5 and under are free. A $3 non-member surcharge will be collected at the door for those without proof of membership.

Wellsville Living History Weekend Demo-June 9th -11th

Wellsville Living History Weekend Demo-June 9th -11th

As many of you know, this year marks the last Wellsville Living History
Weekend, an annual event that combined historical camps with atlatls
and
resulted in much fun. With this being a busy time of year, I know that
participation will be limited, but if you have a moment or two to come
out
in garb or armor and support our last "show" you will be greatly
appreciated!

The demo is to be held June 9th -11th at Island Park in Wellsville, NY in
the
boundaries of the Shire of Hartstone. Camping space is available for
any
wishing to stay and there is a hotel right across the street for any
unable
to camp. There will be fighting (!), an A&S display, mini-seige
equipment
contests, fun, food, and merriment. The World Atlatl Association will
also
be there holding several competitions, including the International
Standardized Accuracy Contest, which is a world competition. This is a
free
event for all participants and for the public. The site opens on
Friday
afternoon at 5 and closes on Sunday evening at 5. There will be
vendors on
site, although most will be vending artifacts and tribal type wares as
opposed to SCA-style merchandise. We will also hold a dish-to-pass
dinner
on Saturday evening. for any interested.

If you would like more information, or need directions please feel free
to
contact the coordinator Lady Renata the posh rot by email:
ladyren-at-gmail.com.

In Servitude,
Lady Renata the posh rot

Scrolls for Kingdoms Project

Scrolls for Kingdoms Project (cross posted proudly for my lady)

Please feel free to forward this information to anyone
that you think might be interested!

Greetings unto all from Lady Aleyd von Kiel and the
Sylvan Signet Office:

War quickly approaches and our King and Queen have
again requested the assistance of the scribes of
Aethelmearc. King Malcom and Queen Tessa have
requested scroll blanks to include in the gift baskets
they will be distributing at Pennsic this year.

The Pennsic Scrolls for Kingdoms Project netted us
over 270 scrolls. The Scrolls for Gleann Abhann
Project netted us approximately 170. Let’s rally
together and make this project just as successful!

This is a great opportunity for scribes of all levels
of ability. If you do a scroll for the gift baskets,
please include your contact information. Some scribes
have received thank-you’s from recipients in distant
kingdoms.

We will have prizes for the following categories:

•	Most hand painted scrolls donated
•	Best heraldic display on a scroll
•	Most senior scribe to complete a scroll for the
project (based on years as a scribe, NOT age!)
•	Newest scribe to complete a scroll for the project

Winners will be announced at Court at Pennsic.

Deadline: Monday of War Week at Pennsic (Monday,
August 14th, 2006)

To whom do you give the scroll blanks?
Lady Aleyd von Kiel (mka Cheryl Ronolder), Coordinator
for the Scrolls for Kingdoms Project. Email
clhbearlover (at) yahoo (dot) com or call 716-372-6055
to coordinate delivery.

You can also mail them to this address: Cheryl
Ronolder; 208 North 4th Street; Olean, NY 14760.

What style:	No restrictions
What size:	Please try for standard sizes that will
easily fit into scroll cases and gift baskets.
What level:	Anything you want, though most kingdoms
are more in need of AOA level awards.
How many:	As many as you want to make. You can work
on them with friends or on your own.
Do I have to make scrolls with the various Kingdom
Arms?
No, but please feel free to do so if you would like.

What are the Kingdoms?
This website has a list of the SCA Kingdoms. If you
cannot access the website, feel free to contact me and
I can send you more details.

http://heraldry.griffin-dor.org/groups/index.htm

What if I don’t want to make scrolls?

Lady Marija Kotok has already gathered some ladies to
make scroll cases for this project, but there is
always a need in the Sylvan Signet office for scroll
cases for scrolls handed out in court.

Donations of scribal care packages (i.e. paper, pens,
paint, etc) for new scribes in the kingdoms could also
be included in the gift baskets. Be creative!

If you need further ideas, please feel free to contact
me!

We thought it would be great if scribes from all over could get
together and play!

This will be a day for scribes of all levels!! Even those people
who haven't tried anything, but would like
to! We will have blanks available for painting. This is a great time to
come work on your projects that you have in the works, or start
something new! Think of this as a social for scribes!

This will be a laid back day. No Garb, no fees. Bring your favorite
munchie to share through out the day! Dinner can be pizza or Chinese
ordered in, or there are several restaurants in the area. We have crash
space available and there are also local hotels. Let me know if you
need crash space.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I apologize for any who receive this more than once. Please
forward
this to other lists.

Greetings gentles of Aethelmearc!

I am with the Shire of Heronter as some of you already know. We have spent several months in brilliant sun and warm weather with friends. But with Winter approaching and leading us indoors for the season, I have begun to think about getting some teaching done at some of our meetings. So, I have lit a fire in our shire with ideas and thoughts on getting the entire group going in a positive direction.

If you are proficient in any of the following areas and would be willing to share your knowledge with us, we would gladly welcome you to join and teach! Please contact me either here on the list or send me an email.

Heavy weapons - We currently have no marshal and about 8-10 people wanting to learn to fight. Some already travel a great distance to get to this meeting and going to some other groups regularly will be a problem. Some need authorized and we would ideally like one or two marshalled. Can you help?

Dancing - we have quiet a few dancers in our group. We'd like to learn something new however. If you have a thought, we'd love to hear from you.

Sewing - we also have a ton of people into sewing. A small workshop or several would be ideal. Most of us have portable machines.

Leatherworking - we desperately want someone to come give us some lessons, instructions and ideas. Many are interested in leather. MANY Many!

Anything else - we have a list of 21 things that we all want to learn. We're starting with the top ones first. But anything that someone is willing to give us in a hands on lesson would be wonderful.

Please email me if you are willing/able.
Muirenn

Taken from the Baronial and Kindgom mailing lists
----------------------------------------------------------
Unto the populace of Æthelmearc and most especially those within the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands:

John Kasper, better known in the Society as Master Johan von Traubenburg, died this afternoon (Monday, October 24th) at Allegheny General Hospital. His loving wife, Baroness Arianna of Wynthrope was with him at the time. Johan is survived by her and their two sons, Kenneth and Robert.

For those you unaware, Johan sustained several injuries at a work site on October 11. Despite his injuries, he was in good spirits and improving. Things took a very sudden turn today and the cause of death is yet unknown.

Funeral arrangements are not yet settled but will be disseminated once made. A future memorial in a style more fitting to Johan will probably be in the further future.

(Posted locally)
Harvest Raid XII
Sept.30 - Oct.2, 2005
Shire of Heronter - Bemus Point, NY

The good folk of Heronter invite everyone to join them September 30 - October 2, 2005 for their 12th annual Harvest Raid! Fighting, Fencing, Archery, Bardic Arts, Thrown Weapons, Merchants, Dancing, an A&S competition, and a fabulous feast are all planned. As is tradition we are privileged to have access to the Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Camp at Route 430 in Bemus Point, New York on beautiful Chautauqua Lake.

We are honored to host Robin & Isabeau's Champion of Aethelmearc Tourney, Kingdom Archery Championships, and Kingdom Thrown Weapons Championships!

In addition Their Royal Majesties Robin & Isabeau will be holding Their Curia, Sunday morning, at 9:30am, in the lower hall.

The event stewards are Mistress Dorinda Courtenay and THL Marguerite de la Marche (Jennifer Bastian, 716-664-4983 before 10 or goodscagirl@madbbs.com ) The reservations clerk is: Mistress Dorinda Courtenay. All questions and reservations should be sent to Her Grace, (Dorinda Courtine-White 62 West Terrace Avenue, Lakewood NY 14750, dorinda.e.courtine-white@cummins.com

Please include the modern names of everyone for whom you are sending a reservation. Please note if your child/babe in arms will require their own seat at feast or their own bed in a cabin. If you require confirmation of your reservation please include an email address or a self-addressed envelope. All checks should be made payable to: SCA Inc. - Shire of Heronter. As always, the only good reservation is a paid reservation. The reservation deadline is September 26th, 2004.

As always, we will try our best to accommodate all cabin requests, however we cannot make any guarantees.

Merchants are always welcome, but renovation to the hall will require all merchants to be outside, so please be prepared with your own shade and furniture. There is no fee, but merchants are encouraged to provide an item for our silent auction. Please contact the Event Stewards with any questions.

Fees are as follows:
Site fee: $7.00 Adults
Feast Fee: $7.00 Adults
Cabin Fee (Cabins): $6.00 Adults (Weekend)
Camping Fee (Tents): $1.00 Adults (Weekend)

Thus, an adult wishing to eat the feast and stay in a cabin would pay $20.00 for the weekend. Children (5-12) are half price, those under 5 are free (but please list them in your reservation should they require a bed or a seat at feast so we may reserve one for them). Students age 12-17 will be discounted to half price for the day fee, but knowing how many of them eat, we must ask the full adult feast price for those who wish to stay for dinner.

The site fee includes a sideboard lunch and the camping/cabin fees include a light breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.

A family cap will be set at $60.00 (2 adults and their children).

Please note that, as per Society policy, a $3 non-member surcharge will be charged on top of all other fees for those gentles age 18 and over who are not members of the SCA.

Directions:
From the West, South and East: Take your best route to I-86 (former Route 17). Take Exit 10 (Westfield / Mayville) to get to Route 430 West. The camp is across the road from a restaurant now called "Kadan's Place".

I know SCA groups are organizing auctions for SCA and other-victems of the hurricane. Is Aethelmearc also orginizing that, or do you leave it up to individual groups?
Because a BIG group can do probebly raise more than a small group. An idea?

About Courtly Manners, Personas and All That…

OK, I am relatively new to the SCA and local events. I have slowly (well, OK, rapidly what with all the photography and message boards I do) been becoming more immersed in the “Dream.” Now I really have no real SCAdian name, they call me “Darter” which is actually my Internet nickname. I have no heraldry, and doubt I ever will since I do not fight. I’m not part of any household though Pentwyvern has adopted me and lets me camp with them at Pennsic. I occasionally make local barony meetings but not knowing anyone I tend to sit quietly in the back.

The really BIG thing I do not have that seems to be essential is a “persona.” Basically I show up to events as me and walk around taking photos. My garb is getting better as time goes by and I find I am just as comfortable in a fancy late period cavalier get up as I am in an early period simple shirt/pants (Pennsic Generic) combo. I often dress according to where I am going to be visiting. For instance what I wore to the Blue Feather Ball when they purchased me to shoot the event (tights, thigh-high boots, silk shirt and doublet w/ slashed sleeves) would NOT be what I would wear when I head out to Tuchux camp. Is the changing of periods and garb types frowned upon? Do I need to come up with a set persona or can I keep being a chameleon and blending in on the environment in which I shoot?

Also, being that I am beginning to interact more with the Royalty, just HOW am I supposed to act. I know in history I am supposed to drop to my knees or something or get the ax but just what am I supposed to do? Is there some resource of court etiquette for “newbies?” I mean, I never know how to address a Baron let alone the King. In fact, I have just had an email exchange with good King Malcolm and I had no idea it was he until he said so… then I was concerned I had maybe breached etiquette by being familiar.

Then there is the speech. I hear a lot of colloquial forms used by some people when they talk to each other but I really do not know how to speak so I tend to be quieter.

Over all though, I really enjoy my experiences with the SCA and my local Barony. I just want to learn the right way of doing things so that I might interact better.

Hai people,

Last Pennsic I was invited by Heronter to stay at their camp. We met at the scandinavian festival in Jamestown and had a blast.
I`m not (yet??) part of the SCA, but have my own viking re-enactors group Yngling Skog, PA.
So Im very new to all the SCA-sociaty. Just being observant. Aethelmaerc would be the kingdom where I would live. So Im just having a look around. I still dont understand the whole circus around the Royals, but maybe it will grow on me.
Just hanging around, doing my crafts and try to inspire people to be more authentic.

Greetings, vikinggirl

To take a quote from The Bard himself:

Now entertain conjecture of a time
When creeping murmur and the poring dark
Fills the wide vessel of the universe.
From camp to camp through the foul womb of night
The hum of either army stilly sounds,
That the fixed sentinels almost receive
The secret whispers of each other's watch:
Fire answers fire, and through their paly flames
Each battle sees the other's umber'd face;
Steed threatens steed, in high and boastful neighs
Piercing the night's dull ear, and from the tents
The armourers, accomplishing the knights,
With busy hammers closing rivets up,
Give dreadful note of preparation:

Good gentles, the last moments of preparation are upon us. The winds
of War advance unto this noble Realm, Ally and Foe caravan through Our fields and the sounds of boast and challenge echo through the air.
Our Rattan soldiers sweat under the sun in service to the Crown and Escarbuncle, fighting with great Honor and endurance 'gainst the might of the Tiger.

Our Archers send their shafts sailing through the sky, piercing the wind
with deadly accuracy.

And, with the setting of the sun comes the comraderie of friendship and
fun.
