A Day in History
On June 7th & 8th, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the Society for Creative Anachronism, the Genesee Valley Atlatl Association and the Genesee Valley Flintknappers will be holding its 9th annual Living History Weekend at the Maple Lane RV Park and Campground in Cuba, N.Y. This is in conjunction with the Cuba Dairy Days Festival, and is free to the public.
If you always wished to spend your day saving damsels in distress or fighting off an angry foe, there will be a medieval festival with several period demonstrations including:
The cheese making process from the goat to the tasting,
Medieval combat demonstrations (you can even try it your self if you dare)
Thrown weapons contests with knives and axes
Period food sampling
Ladies in garb will be happy to teach you about medieval scribal arts
Even try your hand at a medieval dance or two
Every thing we do is hands on
Or, the public is invited to try its hand at using a primitive throwing stick known as the Atlatl to spear a Pre-Historic Mastodon that will be set up on the grounds. The Genesee Valley Atlatl Association will be holding several atlatl competitions during the weekend including the WAA International Standard Accuracy Competitions, Team Atlatl Competitions, Animal Hunters Rounds and Individual Competitions. The past Men's, Women's and Youth World Champions will be present competing with many other contestants from around the country on the tour for World Champion of 2008. There will be a range set up and people to guide anyone who would like to try throwing, but children must be accompanied by an adult as these are weapons.
The Genesee Valley Flintknappers Association will be holding a two-day knap-in. This is using the techniques of percussion and flaking to hammer different types of stone into beautiful points and useful tools. Several experts will be on hand to guide new comers or you can just stand and watch amazing works being created.
On Saturday at 1:00 there will be an auction of works made and donated by the artisans present, including stone from around the world, points, atlatls and darts, hand-made knives and many other pieces.
Vendors will also be on the grounds with creative works of art to view and buy.
The shire of Blackwater is helping do a demo with an assortment of other historical groups.
If you are available we would love to have you come.
And if you are of a mind to camp out there is a 10 dollar fee per tent.
Camping available Friday and sat night.
What we need is food i.e. period cookies / cakes, pies, etc. things not needing refrigeration but are single servings that people can take with them.
Fighters both heavy and fencing. If we can get a fencing martial?
Artisans to show your wears and show how you make your stuff .
We have done this demo for many years and have always had a blast!
